Spotlight and Excerpt: The League of Skull and Bones by M.J. Fletcher
Excerpt:
Prologue
I wasn’t alone in the dark.
Snarls and growls surrounded me, running my blood cold. I moved
my head from side to side, scrunching my eyes, trying desperately to catch
sight of the beasts before they reached me. My crimson swords weighed so heavily
in my hands that I felt as if I’d been fighting for what seemed like eternity.
Claws and fangs suddenly slashed out from the darkness and I did
my best to defend myself, though in my heart I knew it was a losing battle. The
beasts were overpowering me and soon I wouldn’t be able to stop them. No one
was coming to save me. I was alone.

2nd Blog Anniversary/ 18th Birthday Celebration Day 6: Guest Post and Excerpt by Lisa Eugene
Lisa Eugene
Working full time, three kids and a husband
(really four kids) makes finding time to write very difficult! Literally, there
are many times I’ve taken my laptop into my closet and snuggled into a comfy
corner. The problem is that I get so
immersed in my characters and my scenes that I forget where I am until a loud
voice or a scream (usually a scream) intrudes and I realize that I’m sitting on
the floor, in the dark, in the cold, with a pair of slacks wrapped around my
neck and my toes tucked into a sweater vest keeping me warm! Sometimes, I’ll start talking to one of my
characters or whoop really loud because one of them has done something
hilarious. That’s usually a dead giveaway that mommy’s in the closet
again. There are times when my kids will
come in to ask me questions then leave and pull the door close. My husband once
came in while I was writing a steamy sex scene and ended up staying awhile. I
needed to rehang a few items after he left, but damn, that sex scene turned out
great!
Overall, my family has been very understanding about the
time I need, and about how I get so engrossed in my characters. My husband can sometimes
get a little surly, especially if I accidently call him by my current hero’s
name (I’ve learned that’s a total no-no!) The only way to placate him is to
remind him that all my heroes are absolutely gorgeous and hung like a stallion.
I beg him for forgiveness because…hmmm…the similarities are just so close. That usually puts a smile on his face and I’m
free to return to the sanctuary of my closet!
The problem is that I never know where creativity will
strike or where the end to a crazy scene will finally become clear. It could be
while I’m at the playground with my son, or at work, or in the bath. My husband
says I go into a trance, my eyes roll excitedly, and I start speaking in
tongues. Hmmm…doesn’t every writer do
that? It’s called having a creative
moment! At any given time I may have a bag full of coffee cups with scribbles,
napkins with paragraphs written in eyeliner, or yes, even leaves with strange
markings that are only recognizable to me. These things I will protect with my
life until I’m able to get to my laptop. And God save the person who
accidentally tosses them out!!! Spontaneous creativity may only strike once so
I try my damdest to jump in its path!

Excerpt: The Darkest Part by Trisha Wolfe
Excerpt
Rain is coming
down in sheets, battering me as the wind sends it sideways. I yank the back of
my shirt over my head by the collar, trying to guard against falling pinecones. Wind tears at my bare stomach. I pull my shirt
straight and tuck the front into my jeans to shield my skin.
There’s no way she’s out here in
this. She wouldn’t be…not for me. But when I turn the corner of the trail, I
catch sight of a white T-shirt. And then Sam, her back flush against the black
bark of the tree.
Her head is lowered as she stares at
the ground. My breath catches in my throat. The rain continues to beat the crap
out of me, obscuring my vision, but I don’t blink as I take in her drenched
body. Her white T-shirt. Fuck. I’m so fucked.
As if she can hear my thoughts, she
looks up. A hesitant smile slides across her beautiful face, and like the
lightning striking above, electrifying the air, my heart kick starts. I’m
breathing again.
My feet race across the root-covered
path, and when I reach her, I swallow hard. Rain water drips down her face, rolling
over her full lips, and her black hair is slicked back. Like she just got out
of the shower. I try to keep my gaze from drifting lower, but dammit. Her white
shirt clings to her body, teasingly revealing the fact she’s either not wearing
a bra, or she’s wearing a really thin one.
I’m instantly sporting a semi. I
give myself a mental punch to the gut, clearing my thoughts. I don’t know how
to start this. My mouth is dry, and if I had any words in my empty head before,
they’re long gone. Maybe I misread her paint—
Her arm snakes around my neck,
pulling my shirt off my head, and I realize—like a dumbass—I’m still holding it
above me. Her other hand goes to my stomach, and I suck in a sharp breath at the
feel of her warm skin through the material. Her body presses against me, and
it’s so delicate, fragile. She’s shaking. I want to hold her tight. Feel every
bit of her.
“What are we doing?” she asks,
releasing a small, timid laugh.
I swallow again. “I don’t know…but
whatever it is, I don’t want to stop.”
Heat blazes in her eyes, desire. And
I try to remind myself that this is Sam. My next door neighbor, and the girl
I’ve known since she was in diapers. But she’s far more mature than her years;
she sees things clearer than anyone I’ve ever met—is more sultry than any woman
I’ve ever seen.
Shutting down my brain, I brush a
wet lock of hair from her cheek. She gasps at my touch and bites down on her
lip, and it’s my undoing. Gripping her soaking shirt, I pull her to me and
press my lips to hers.
It’s soft and questioning, us trying
to figure out our beat. It’s nervous and unsure, but as her mouth parts to
welcome me in, I dip my tongue inside the hollow of her mouth, taste the
sweetness of her. When she matches me, her tongue sliding over mine, mingling,
heat scorches the back of my throat. My pulse quickens as a tremor rocks me.
She shivers in my arms, whether from
the cold or the kiss, I’m not sure. But all I want to do is make her shiver
more. And then warm her. I bend at the knees and grasp her thighs, lifting her
into my arms. Something primal is taking over—driving out any hesitation. She
latches her arms around my neck, locking her legs around my waist.
I’m moving us forward or backward…I
don’t know. But I feel the tree bark against my knuckles at some point, and I
press Sam against it, her body molding to mine. Our kiss becomes crushing and
hungry, and I’m suddenly desperate, scared for it to end.
I’ve never opened myself up to
anyone like this, especially a girl. I’ve made out with them and other things.
Hell, I’m a guy. But with Sam…I know I’m vulnerable now. I can feel her
reaching in and taking up residency in my soul.
It’s painful and pleasurable and
scary as hell.
Thunder cracks above, the rain beats
down, but we’re lost beneath a black dead tree—feeling alive.
The Darkest Part
by Trisha Wolfe (Goodreads Author)Pressing the boundaries of both the psyche and the heart, Sam and Holden embark on a dangerous journey that will test the limits of love.

She was engaged to her childhood best friend and high school sweetheart, Tyler Marks, planning an amazing cross-country honeymoon during her college break. But after a hit-and-run leaves her in ruin, she begins seeing Tyler’s fractured, ghostly presence, and her family believes she’s losing her mind. Not until she completes their journey, stopping along the way to scatter Tyler's remains, will Tyler be able cross over. Only...is Sam ready for him to leave her?
When the black sheep of the Marks' family, Holden Marks, returns to check on Tyler's case, Sam convinces him to give her his brother's ashes. Despite their shaky history, she needs him...plus, he owes it to Sam and his brother. What she doesn’t count on is Holden’s relentlessness to go on the trip.
On the road, Holden realizes just how unhinged Sam has become. Dealing with her psychosis forces him to confront his dark past, making it harder to keep secrets hidden that should remain buried. Especially from Sam, the only woman he’s ever loved. And as Sam starts to unravel the truth, she begins to question if the brother she's unwillingly falling for again is in an even darker place than her.

***Excerpt***
Cale stood in the shadowed doorway. Before him was everything he’d ever wanted, there for the taking, but for the first time in a long time, he was afraid to make a move. A blush of moonlight filtered down from the skylight to bathe Kendra’s sleeping form in a tender halo. So beautiful that it hurt to look upon her while dark, urgent thoughts prowled. His gaze adored the relaxed innocence of her features, the way her fair hair rippled across the pillow like silk. No protective bulk of fleece tonight. Something silky and shimmering detailed the contours of her graceful shape. His soft exhale of longing was tempered by the fisting of hands that still shook. He couldn’t keep himself away any longer.
His need had intensified into an agony of desire and regret. Her scent drew him inexorably where he shouldn’t go, where he couldn’t trust himself to be. Close enough to be a threat to her. Because promises had yet to be sealed with a bond. She stirred in her sleep, murmuring softly, rolling onto her back. That slippery gown whispered across her breasts and hips the way his hands yearned to. He watched her take unhurried breaths, unaware of how harsh and forceful his own had become. Take her! It was the way his family did things. Swift, purposeful action, necessarily brutal, to take and hold what was theirs. His queen, beside him. His heirs, inside her. That dizzying heat returned, scalding his brain, flaming through his body in a shuddering rush. She’s yours by her own vow. Claim her! She shifted within that seductive wrap of silk, and all he could think of was tearing it off her, tearing into her, feeling the warmth of her body, tasting her blood, exulting in the glorious relief of joining with her beautiful spirit. Staining it. Bruising it. Crushing it along with her trust and any love she might ever have felt for him.
“Cale?” The cool touch of her voice pierced through the pounding rage of his intentions. He faded back into shadow, silently withholding his presence from her until she settled back to sleep. He hadn’t returned. In the warm pooling sunlight, Kendra glanced about in sinking dismay. Cale hadn’t come back. Nothing had been disturbed since she’d lain back upon the covers to wait for him. His absence was unexpectedly wounding, but the reason behind it filled her with unease. Would another Terriot prince be moving in today to replace him? If that were the case, she could anticipate no mercy or restraint. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the brutal sight of Bram Terriot growling over her mother’s back. Was that what she had to look forward to in the next few hours? If she ran, would she have the slightest chance of escape? If you don’t accept my protection, I can’t help you. She’d never get off the mountain intact, perhaps not even alive.
Struggling with that panicked certainty, Kendra slipped from the bed and moved anxiously into the outer room. She came to an abrupt halt at the sight that greeted her. The prayer of relief whispered from her, soft and shaky. Cale was sprawled on the floor with one booted foot on the sofa cushions, showing every indication of a hard, hellacious night. His closed eyes were sunken and deeply shadowed, his hair stiff with dried sweat. More bloodstains covered his skin and torn clothing; perhaps he’d found more debts that needed settling. She was guiltily pleased to note that no female scent was attached to him. He didn’t stir as she crossed the room. Carefully, she moved his foot and reclined on the cushions, resting her head on her arm as she studied him. Cale Terriot. Treasured friend from childhood or terrorizing intimidator from the not so distant past? The lines between the two confusingly blurred.
There were moments when he’d smile and the surfacing sweetness would stir in her all sorts of buried emotions, leaving her dangerously vulnerable. Then that expressionless mask would drop into place, the one he wore when about his father’s business, and from behind it he could deal out a stunning degree of viciousness, as if morality never registered. Both sides fed upon her loneliness, upon the restlessness of late-blooming sexuality. Was she seriously considering staying with him? About bonding as his life’s mate? That would mean remaining here, locked away from a world she’d hoped to enjoy, a pampered prisoner, but prisoner nonetheless. Sharing every little intimate detail of her days and nights with this quixotic man she didn’t understand. Trusting him to care for her, to protect and cherish her. Then there was the sex. And that, she guessed, would be frequent and vigorous whenever and wherever he was in the mood. Just thinking about it quickened the curious stir in her center. Before she could stop herself, she put her fingertips to his cheek. And gasped as he caught her wrist roughly. His eyes flashed open, seeming more incredibly pale and beautiful against the shaded bruising surrounding them. Once he recognized her, his words were rough.
“Probably not a good idea to startle me when I’m sleeping.”
“I’ll make a note.” Kendra withdrew her hand when he released it, rubbing at her abraded wrist while he rolled his head away and laid his forearm across his eyes. “I didn’t hear you come in last night.”
“Yeah, well, I didn’t have reason to wake you.” That flat tone deflated fragile hopes. Kendra swallowed hard. A forlorn prickle of pride refused to let her beg him.
“It should only take a few minutes to pack up my things.”
“What?” His gaze flew up to meet hers, eyes wide and round and filled with a tumble of complex emotion. “You’re leaving?”
“Isn’t that what you want?”
“No.” He drew a quick, jerky breath. “Do you want me to?”
The last thing she’d expected was for him to place that kind of power in her hands, but he delivered it without any hesitation. Kendra sat up and carefully weighed her next words. “I can’t stay if I’m afraid of you.” She gave that time to settle in. His stare, so intense and still, was riveted to hers. “There have to be rules.” A quick blink.
“You’re giving me rules?” She heard his arrogant claim in her head. I’m a Terriot prince. I do whatever the hell I want. But she didn’t back down.
“Someone has to, Cale.”
“So,” he ventured carefully, “what are they?”

Spotlight: Giveaway and Excerpt: A note of Scandal by Nicky Penttilla
***Excerpt***
Excerpt, first kiss
“I might tell you one of my secrets.” She gave him an oddly timid smile, as if she were unsure of her allure. “A false promise. You have no secrets from me.” “No?” “Not with that expressive mouth. And those eyes.” He stroked her chin. “And that jaw line.” She leaned into his touch. “Can you be sure?” “As sure as I am of anything. I knew you were hopping mad when you came in here, and it was not all about me.” “True.” She lifted her head away, just a fraction, from his hand. “But you didn’t seem to know you’d stung me in Mr. Swizzlewit’s office.” “I did know. But what you may not have known was that our solicitor had given me the worst of news, and I was angry with the world and ready to lash out. Unfortunately for you, and for me.” “For you?” “Most assuredly. For I knew it meant that later I would have to humble myself abjectly and plead for forgiveness.” “You did not need to.” “I did. You see, Miss Olivia Delancey, your good opinion means much to me, it turns out. I did not feel right after you left, not until I saw you walk through my door.” “Such flattery.” He shrugged. “Truth. We don’t go much in for lying here.” It was her turn to put her hand over her heart. “I thank you for your kind apology. It is accepted. Now may I do something for you?” He could imagine many things she could do. Likely none of them were what she was thinking of. “What?” “Come to Plymouth. I know the town well, and can guide you. We might even arrange to row out and meet the ship in harbor. A first.” “A scoop.” “Meet me at our house at Manor Gardens above Union Street. I’ll get you your story.” How could he say no? “Deal. And a finder’s fee.” He took her jaw in his hand again, thumb over her cheekbone, and pulled her gently toward him. He brushed his lips against hers. The barest whisper of a touch, but it pushed all the thunderclouds from his mind, making way for the sweet warmth of spring sun. Then she pressed back, and the sun grew hotter. His hips moved of their own accord closer to hers, possessive. Her hand on his chest, over his heart, seared him, marking him as hers. Footsteps sounded in the hallway, and they pulled away. Her gaze was softly intent, as if she were trying to read his mind. He prayed she could not.

Especially when it could carry so much good: a new life for a wounded soldier, catharsis after long years of war—and an opportunity for lady composer Olivia Delancey to finally hear her music played in public.Newspaper publisher Will Marsh refuses to compound the sins of his father’s generation by taking money to print propaganda. But with the end of the wars in France and America, he needs something new to drive Londoners to grab his paper first. Why not publish the score of the “Tune That Took Waterloo,” by a wounded vet, no less?As Olivia struggles to keep her secrets from this unsuitably alluring publisher, and Will fights to find the truth without losing his hold on this bright-eyed angel who has descended into his life, both discover another sort of truth.Being the talk of London can be bad—or very, very good.
Interesting elements:
The
newspaper-publishing setting is very rare in regencies but fascinating to the
author, a former newspaperwoman.
Music
plays a big role: Olivia plays pianoforte and Spanish-style guitar; there are
three very different concerts in the story.
Water
also is big: the hero falls in the sound and nearly drowns; the heroine
surprises the hero during a steamy bath.
Olivia
lies to help a wounded veteran and he is a strong secondary character. Services
and conditions for war veterans were poor at this time.
