As part of this blog tour I’ve done a few interviews. I find that one
of the common questions authors get asked is where we do our writing and what our
writing time looks like. So I thought it might be fun to share my writing space
with you.
I am a working mom. So almost all of my writing happens at night after
the kids are in bed and I’ve wrapped up anything for work that needs doing. My
favorite place to work on my books is in my bedroom. I usually set up on my
bed. We’ve had our furniture and bedding since we got married and I still love
it. Our room feels cozy to me and is one of my favorite spaces in the house.
My version of setting up usually means I’m surrounded by gadgets. Which
I find funny since I don’t consider myself to be a gadget person. I’m addicted
to Ruzzel, so my phone is usually on the bedside table so I can play a game or
two when I’m thinking. I have my Kindle beside me because it’s always with me.
And the TV is on. I’m a Game of Throes junkie. I honestly don’t know what to
watch at the moment because it’s off season. I have the remote close at hand
because I’m usually watching two or three shows at the same time. Undiagnosed
ADD? Highly likely.
My computer is on my lap. I know, I know, ergonomics is an issue. I
actually had to purchase a speaking software because my arms and wrists bug me
these days. I type a lot for work, and just recently finished an MBA which also
required a lot of typing. The software works wonders. But this means I now have
a headset on which makes me look like a telephone operator. You should see what
that software comes up with when I try to make it type the word “Vyusher” –
usually something along the lines of “value share.”
I don’t listen to music. If I’m really trying to bang through a rough
section or I’m getting too distracted by the TV, I’ll work in total silence.
That happens a lot when I get closer to finishing the first draft of a book.
The end is in sight and I pick up speed. There’s usually never food involved. I
don’t snack much at night. I write until I’m too tired to keep my eyes open. My
goal is at least three pages a night. I range from three to twenty in a given
night depending on how in the flow I am and what I’m writing about. And then I
conk out. Bedtime is all over the map.
I’m not sure if this is anywhere close to “normal” for most authors.
But I’m comfy, cozy, and happy, so it works for me!
Thanks to Celestial Reviews for hosting me!
